Forfatteren Gil besøger Paris med sin ulidelige forlovede, Inez, men har egentlig mest lyst til at udforske byen på egen hånd. Da Gil spankulerer alene ned ad Montmartre ved midnatstid, inviterer en gruppe fremmede ham ind i deres bil. På mystisk vis stiger de ud i 1920'erne, Gils foretrukne æra.
