War Horse er et krigsdrama, baseret på Michael Morpurgos populære børnebog fra 1982, der også har haft stor succes som teaterstykke. Albert (Jeremy Irvine) er tæt knyttet til sin hest Joey, og det får derfor uoverskuelige konsekvenser, da hans far (Peter Mullan) sælger hesten til det britiske kavaleri. Forude venter der Joey en hård skæbne i skyttegravene under 1. Verdenskrig, og den unge Albert drager nu til Frankrig og krigens rædsler for at blive genforenet med sin hest.
