Season 1, psychiatrist Dr. Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott), his wife Vivien (Connie Britton) and teenage daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga), move from Boston to Los Angeles to start again after Vivien gives birth to a stillborn baby and Ben has an affair with Hayden (Kate Mara), one of his students. But when Hayden subsequently visits L.A. in the hope of rekindling her lost relationship, she sets in motion a chain of events that will have terrifying consequences for all concerned, as over the coming months the Harmon household's ghostly residents set in play their secret, murderous agenda.

Season 2 follows the past and present events at Briarcliff Mental Institution, a Massachusetts asylum for the criminally insane. Run by the Catholic church, the institution is overseen by its founder, Monsignor Timothy Howard (Joseph Fiennes), Sister Jude (Jessica Lange) and Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe). As the tyrannical Sister Jude continues to cross swords with sadistic medical officer Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell), journalist Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson) arrives at Briarcliff to investigate claims of mistreatment of the patients. It's not long, however, before she finds herself confronting untold horrors, as the evil that permeates the building, along with the deranged serial killer known as Bloody Face, begin to make their presence felt.
