Historien foregår på en øde forskningsstation midt i det antarktiske ishav. 12 forskere og teknikere, med den karismatiske pilot MacReady (Kurt Russel) i spidsen, forsøger at undgå at dø af kolde og kedsomhed. Den fredelige stemning bliver brudt, da en løssluppen hund søger tilflugt, skarpt forfulgt af en helikopter. I helikopteren sidder nogle nordmænd, der gør hvad de kan for at få ram på hunden med gevær og granater. Det lykkes ikke og nordmændene bliver selv dræbt, før de når at forklare sagen. Forskerne på stationen tager hunden til sig uvidende om hvilke hemmeligheder den indeholder: gemt i den er nemlig en formskiftende alien i stand til at absorbere og tage form efter en hvilken som helst organisme.
