Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts) underviser i kunsthistorie ved Wellesley College, år 1953. Hendes elever, alle kvindelige studerende, tænker ofte mere på mænd og giftermål end på deres studier. Katherine er fast besluttet på at lære dem om feministiske værdier og gøre dem til selvstændige kvinder. Hun skifter desuden det klassiske pensum ud med undervisning i moderne kunst, hvorved hun for alvor kommer i konflikt med omgivelsernes holdning.
