Historien om Ned Kelly er historien om en af Australiens største legender, som både er blevet kaldt en helt og morderiske skurk. Allerede i 1906 blev Ned Kelly og hans bande filmatiseret i Ned Kelly and His Gang, og senest i 1970 blev den igen filmatiseret i Ned Kelly. Historien om Ned Kelly er således en væsentlig del af den australske kultur, hvilket også blev understreget ved åbningsceremonien ved OL i Sydney.
