Tusind Og En Nat afslutter Pasolinis livsbekræftende trilogi, hvor Decamerone (1971) og Canterbury Fortællingerne (1972) udgjorde første og anden del.
Indspilningerne er foregået i Jemen, Etiopien, Iran og Nepal og derfor byder filmen på en drømmelignende beskrivelse af kærlighed og sensualitet. Vi følger slavinden Zamurrad, som bliver solgt, men får tilladelse til selv at vælge sin nye herre. Hun vælger en fattig ung mand, Nur-el-Din, men bliver kidnappet fra ham af skurken Gawian.
