Det er slutningen af Første Verdenskrig, og vi er i Frankrig. Mathilde er 19 år gammel. Hendes forlovede Manech drog i 1917 til fronten. Lige som millioner andre er han opført som ”faldet i kamp”. Men det nægter Mathilde at tro på. Hvis Manech var død, ville hun kunne mærke det. Hun følger sin intuition og håber, at det vil føre hende til hendes forlovede. Også selv om det menes, at Manech er en af i alt 5 franske soldater, der ved krigsret blev dømt til døden for selv-påførte sår. De 5 mænd blev, ifølge rygterne, skubbet ud af deres egne skyttegrave til den sikre død i ingenmandslandet ”Bingo Crépuscule”. Men Mathilde nægter at give op.
