En gammel mand står en dag uden for hoveddøren til 12 årige Jesse's middelklassehjem i en forstad til Seattle. Til Jesse's forældres forbløffelse fortæller han, at han søger sin læremesters reinkarnation, og at meget tyder på, at det er Jesse!

Bernado Bertolucci's modern day re-telling of Siddhartha's story and the founding of Buddhism, with Keanu Reeves in the title role as the Prince who undergoes the Five Ascetic principles to achieve Nirvana. With a framing story set in 1994 Seattle, a young American boy is approached by a Bhutan Monk with the news that he is the reincarnation of a respected monk who died in Seattle nine years earlier, Bertolucci presents the 2500-year old story of Siddhartha's path to enlightenment with a view to saying something contemporary and relevant about the possibilities of metaphysical truth. |
