Dr Marissa Blumenthal has just been promoted to investigator at the world-famous Centres for Disease Control. Her first case is to study an outbreak of an unknown disease at a Los Angeles clinic. It should be simple, yet as Marissa begins to follow the trail of clues, she finds that the outbreak is not isolated. People are dying all over the country. Delving deeper, she discovers that the disease is not unknown but is a lethal virus that was contained over twenty years previously. the only traces of it are kept in a high-security medical lab. Her investigation becomes more sinister when she finds that the test-tube of virus is missing.
Marissa is moving closer and closer to the truth, but each step she takes becomes more dangerous. top-level physicians are warning her off. her home is vandalised, and someone is trying to kill her.
