One of the forerunners of the Spanish New Wave alongside contemporaries Pedro Almodover and Julio Medem, Bigas Luna's saucy, sexy comedies earned him a reputation as 'provocateur of the perverse'. Incredibly erotic whilst never losing their razor-sharp satirical wit, his colourful films launched the international careers of Penelope Cruz (Volver, Vanilla Sky) and Javier Bardem (The Sea Inside, Before Night Falls) and garnered a worldwide cult following.
The Ages Of Lulu:
Bristling with potent erotic imagery, this exquisite film tells the tale of a young girl's sexual enlightenment. When fifteen-year-old Lulu succumbs to the advances of one of her brother's friends, Pablo, she soon finds herself in the back of his car, having her first sexual experience. Years later, the two meet again, get married and create their own private universe, spending their time making love. However, their world of intense sexual exploration is soon shattered when Pablo pushes Lulu to far.
Jamon Jamon:
When Headstrong senorita and daughter of the town prostitute Silvia (Penelope Cruz) become pregnant with village Mummy's-boy Jose's baby, his overbearing mother takes action. She hires sexy, young Raul (Javier Bardem) who works in the ham-factory and enjoys nude bullfighting, to seduce Silvia. What ensues is a series of chaotic and frantic couplings, much testosterone overload, breasts that taste of ham and a dual to the death with a side of bacon. Hot sexy, and outrageously funny.
Golden balls:
Ruthless stud Benito Gonzalez (Javier Bardem) wants wealth, women and a skyscraper erected in his honour. In order to achieve this, he marries the sophisticated daughter of a rich banker, Marta (Maria de Medeiros - Pulp Fiction) but keeps mistress Claudia (Maribel Verdu - Y Tu Mama Tambien, Belle Epoque) on the side. When Marta and Claudia realise they are both victims of Benito's greed, Benito's world starts to crumble, skyscraper and all. A caustic satire of kitsch and the new rich.
The Tit And The Moon:
Set in colourful Catalan resort, this exuberant, sexy and surreal fairytale tells of a young boy's search for the perfect breast. Tete is a nine year old boy who is consumed with jealously at his baby brother's monopoly of his mum's nipples. After asking the moon for a breast of his own, his prayers are answered with the arrival of Estrellita (Mathilda May - The Jackal) a beautiful French Dancer. But the course of true love doesn't run smooth and Tete finds stiff competition for her affection.... |
