"Rhapsody in August" er en fortælling om tre generationer og deres holdninger og forbindelser til atombomberne over Japan i 1945. Hovedpersonen Kane er en ældre dame midt i 80'erne, hvis mand blev dræbt af atombomben over Nagasaki. Hendes to børn spiller en mindre rolle, da de er på besøg hos et døende familiemedlem - Kane's bror - på Hawaii, og til sidst er der Kane's børnebørn.

Forty-four years on from the death of her husband in the Nagasaki holocaust, an old woman is prompted to recall the past after a visit from her four grandchildren and an American-Japanese nephew (Richard Gere). As she tells her story she also chronicles the modern history of Japanese society, and comes to terms with the despair she still feels over the loss her beloved spouse.
