James "Sonny" Crockett (Don Johnson) og Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) arbejder som civilklædte narkobetjente hos Miami Vice. Deres livsstil matcher deres opgaver - Sonny bor på en sejlbåd sammen med sin krokodille Elvis, og Tubbs er forhenværende New Yorker, så han bor sammen med sit oversavede haglgevær. Sammen tager de kampen op mod Floridas underverden og går på jagt efter dem, der har myrdet Tubbs bror.
Miami Vice indeholder alt det, der var sejt i 1980'erne, og serien har fået kultstatus på grund af de mange berømte gæsteskuespillere og ikke mindst Jan Hammers musik. TV-serien har i årenes løb modtaget en række Emmy-priser.
