Den 11 maj 1969 indledte amerikanske soldater angrebet på det bjerg i Vietnam, som på militærsprog kaldes "937". 10 dage og 11 blodige angreb senere, nåede mindre end 200 mænd toppen. Over 2/3 af styrken havde sat livet til under angrebet, sønderskudt i småstykker af vietnamesiske modangreb. Som minde over sine døde kammerater gav de overlevende bjerget navnet "Hamburger Hill".
