Handlingen begynder i årene før Anden Verdenskrig, da en fattig, japansk pige bliver tvunget til at forlade sin familie for at arbejde som stuepige i et geisha hus.
På trods af en forrædderisk rival, som næsten får knækket hendes livsmod, blomstrer hun op og udvikler sig til den legendariske Geisha Sayuri.
Smuk og kultiveret forfører og erobrer hun tidens mest magfulde mænd, men er samtidig plaget af en hemmelig kærlighed til den eneste mand, som hun ikke kan få. Som en lille pige bliver Chiyo solgt til et geisha-hus, hvor hun gennemgår en ond og udmattende træning frem mod sin debut som selskabsdame og elskerinde. Lederen Hatsumomo er misundelig på Chiyous skønhed, og livet er hårdt indtil rivalen Mameha, tager hende under sine vinger og Chiyo begynder sin forvandling til den eftertragtede geisha Sayuri.

Drama based on the novel by Arthur Golden. Set in a mysterious and exotic world which still casts a potent spell today, the story begins in the years before World War II, when a Japanese child is torn from her penniless family to work as a servant in a geisha house. Despite a treacherous rival who nearly breaks her spirit, the girl blossoms into the legendary geisha Sayuri (Ziyi Zhang). Beautiful and accomplished, Sayuri captivates the most powerful men of her day, but is haunted by her secret love for the one man beyond her reach. |
