A man in whom sacrilege, lasciviousness, imposture, fraud and heresy are so evenly mixed that they can only inspire in Christian souls the greatest of grief and horror.
This dramatisation, loosely based on the memoirs of the 18th century libertine, was Dennis Potter's first adaptation and his first TV series. The six-part series explored the life of the infamous adventurer from his escape from imprisonment at the hands of the Venetian authorities to his many romantic encounters. There was much eyebrow-raising in 1971 at the series' sexual content, but in the stories of a young nobleman devoted to pleasure we can detect Potter developing his style and beginning to explore his favourite themes of paralysis, ego and the power of memory. |
