Det her er historien om Berit og Gösta. Hun er en ung pige, som har tilbragt flere år på et hjem for piger for at få styr på sit liv. Nu bor hun sammen med sin mor, men deres forhold er langsomt ved at gå i opløsning. Moderen hykler omsorg, men prøver i virkeligheden at sørge for, at Berit bliver anbragt på et opdragelseshjem. Han er en sømand, der vender hjem efter mange år på havet. De mødes og forelsker sig, men der er meget, som står i vejen for, at de kan få et lykkeligt liv sammen.

Unable to live with her mother, Berit is institutionalised for many years. When she is released from the institutions she ends up on the streets of the harbour slums of Gothenburg, and is forced to take a job.
The job is conditional on her living with her mother and she becomes a young woman in deep suicidal despair. One night she escapes her mother's overbearing apartment to go to a dance and, in an effort to lighten her spirits, she meets a sailor and tells her new-found confidante of her troubled past. She starts to spend more time with him and begins to meet others, soon, she discovers that she is not the only one with problems.
Inspired by the Italian neo-realist Roberto Rossellini this uncompromising tale touches on issues that are just as controversial today as 60 years ago - illegal abortion and the consequences of a limited social welfare system. Available for the first time, this powerful and evocative film bears many of the touches that would come to define the work of one of the world's most celebrated directors. |
