A Rodgers and Hammerstein classic revolving around a forbidden love affair between a native girl and a young American sailor on a Pacific island during World War II. SOUTH PACIFIC's blend of war, love, and racial bigotry is based on the novel TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC by James A. Michener. The musical follows the spunky Nellie Forbush, a World War II nurse stationed on a tropical island in the Pacific. Nellie meets a French plantation owner and falls in love with the mysterious man whose lifestyle is so different from her own Little Rock roots. Lt. Joseph Cable, a marine sent to the island with top-secret plans to spy on the nearby Japanese fleet, becomes friends with a local merchant, Bloody Mary, she brings him to the enchanted island of Bali Ha'i, where she introduces him to her daughter an exotic beauty he soon becomes enamored with. The lovely tropical location is the perfect backdrop to showcase Rodgers & Hammerstein's mesmerising score, which includes the classic songs 'Some Enchanted Evening', 'Bali Ha'i', 'There Is Nothin' Like a Dame', 'Younger Than Springtime', 'A Cock-eyed Optimist', and 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair'. |
