Peter O'Toole leverer en sand pragt-præstation i rollen som Henry II, der i 1100-tallets England overrasker sit folk ved, som et modtræk mod kirkens øgede magt, at indsætte sin gamle ven Thomas Becket (Richard Burton) som kansler.
