Filmen begynder i Peking i 1908, da den 3-årlige Pu Yi krones som kejser af Kina. Men tre år efter kroningen falder det korrupte imperialistiske system, og Kina bliver republik. Ikke desto mindre forsætter livet bag murene, som om intet var hændt. Drengen bliver behandlet som en gud, og må gøre som han vil - blot må han ikke forlade paladset. Folkene omkring ham forsøgte at skjule sandheden for ham, men en flig af, hvad der foregår på den anden side af sin lærer, skotten Sir Reginald, som 18-årlig er Pu Yi gift med to smukke kvinder og lever ubekymret, indtil realiteterne forstyrrer hans fredfulde liv. Han smides ud fra paladset og "Den Forbudte By", og må med sin lærer hjælp flygte. Han begår sit livs fejl, da han tager imod et tilbud fra Kinas fjende Japan. Peking, 1908. A three-year old boy is removed from his home and his mother and is carried through the entire night to the Forbidden City, the heart of ancient China. His name is Pu Yi. Days later he is placed on the Dragon Throne and becomes 'The Lord of Ten Thousand Years', 'The Son of Heaven', ruler over almost half of the world's population. Pu Yi is the Emperor of China and the loneliest boy on Earth. But three years later, in 1912, China becomes a republic, the Quing dynasty is forced to abdicate and more than 3,000 years of imperial rule come to an end. The Last Emperor is the story of Pu Yi's life, from the end of the Qing dynasty to the first republic of Sun Yat Sen; from the warlords of the twenties to the Kuomintang of Chiang Kai-Shek; from the Japanese invasion to the State of Manchukuo, where Pu Yi becomes a puppet emperor controlled by the Japanese; from the Second World War to the foundation of the People's Republic; from a decade of Mao's re-education programme to the beginning of the Cultural Revolution. |
