Vi befinder os i New York. I de stormfulde og glamourøse år op til 1. Verdenskrig - en tid hvor alt synes muligt. Hovedpersonen, den sorte pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. Er en stolt og begavet mand. Hans stolthed sættes dog på prøve, da han konfronteres med den overklassefamilie, som har taget hans kæreste og hans uægte barn til sig. Coalhouse udvikler dog langsomt et varmt forhold til familien, som giver ham deres uforbeholden støtte.
Problemerne kommer på afstand og optimismen blomster. Lige indtil den dag, hvor en gruppe racistiske brandmænd udser Coalhouse som deres næste offer...
Dette er endnu et mesterværk fra stjerneinstruktøren Milos Forman. Filmen blev ved sin premiere nomineret til 8 Oscars.

Milos Forman's lavish adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's panoramic novel of American life in the early years of the 20th century. Mixing fact and fiction, the drama unfolds on a number of different fronts: a millionaire kills a celebrated architect in a dispute over the millionaire's showgirl wife; a black ragtime pianist is pushed to the limit when his car is destroyed by a racist fire chief; a middle-class family gradually comes apart at the seams; and an immigrant artist struggles to build a new life for himself in the New World. The film cost $32 million and was the result of a production process which saw at least one director - Robert Altman - fall by the way side; it also features Jimmy Cagney's return to the screen after a 20 year hiatus. |
