Efter en ubeskrivelig tragedie får to personer en ny chance i liften. Da Audrey Burke (Halle Berry) mistersin mand ved et tilfældigt overfald, bliver hun konfronteret med sin mands bedste ven fra barndommen Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro).
